It's not unusual for patients to be anxious, nervous or even fearful of the dentist's chair. That's why Paardevlei Smile Dental offers sedation dentistry. Patients who need to relax and feel comfortable throughout their treatment have a number of options to choose from at our facility, including oral sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives are often used for longer and more extensive procedures. Medication is taken (as a pill) approximately 30 minutes before the patient's arrival, and allows the patient to be relaxed although conscious. A friend, who will drive the patient home where they will sleep and wake up with no memory of the appointment, should accompany the patient. When oral sedation is administered, patients must arrange transportation to and from the appointment.
Intravenous Sedation
IV sedation can be used for a heavier conscious sedation during procedures when necessary. Treatment is administered intravenously, and the patient's vitals will be monitored closely during this form of sedation.
Sedation can be used for a number of other situations to help make dental treatment easier. Patients who have a strong gag reflex can benefit from sedation, as can those who may have disorders that can cause twitches or unexpected movements during treatment. During the initial consultation, sedation dentistry will be discussed in order to ensure the comfort and ease of the patient.
